Reviews
We booked for lunch at Hellyers Road after the distillery tour and neither experience disappointed.
The tour is an interesting and informative behind the scenes look at the operation of a distillery and the process for making a good whiskey. If you're a whiskey lover, it's worth paying for the taste of their 19 year old. And is you're REALLY a whiskey lover, you'll invest in the opportunity to bottle your own (complete with wax sealed lid and numbered bottles).
The tour takes about an hour so plan your dining accordingly. We started with the soup of the day - tomato - which was declared a winner... until the mains. The whiskey cured trout was raved about and probably topped the excellent fillet steak and the delicious pie. All serves were generous and tasty (did I mention the whiskey cured trout?). Service was friendly and polite, if a little slow (but we weren't in a rush). Would definitely return for a meal when next in the area.
Do the $114 tasting. Don't question it. Just do it. Wow. The staff are all knowledgeable and friendly. The tasting itself is as engaged or low key as you want - we opted to taste the 3 staff-assigned drams after chatting with them on our own personal preferences. Nailed it. Each was fantastic, and we brought 2 bottles. Internet is a bit patchy up there, so recommend taking a physical card for purchases. Best whisky in Tasmania so far.
Decided to come here for lunch along the North West Tasmanian Tasting tour. Pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food on offer. Both the whisky-braised beef potted pie and the Gnocchi were both delicious. Prices were a little steep, but for the quality and taste you’ll still be satisfied dining here.
Came on an organised bus tour that promised whisky tasting. This place needs a course in marketing. The actual whisky tasting was miniscule and they were more interested in pushing the creams. I would have preferred sampling the different barrel flavours and an intelligent conversation about their whisky.
Always worthwhile bringing tourists here. Interesting distillery tour, and the unique opportunity to fill your own bottle from a cask. Peaceful surrounds, nicely landscaped with art and some awesome wartah trees at the driveway entrance.
Also worthwhile staying for lunch at The Distillery Restaurant . On our tight budget we intended to share a ploughman's platter but accidentally got served a ploughman's Feast, the most expensive item on the menu. No regrets there, the waitress apologised for her mistake but we decided to pay for it as it was absolutely magnificent! We consider ourselves lucky as we would have been to cheap to order it otherwise!
Pleasant visit at the distillery cellar door.
We had done the tasting of 3 different whiskies and 3 different cream liqueurs paired with handmade whisky chocolates.
Great chocolate pairings on the cream liqueurs.
Had the original, 12 year old and the Leven's limited edition. The Leven's was viscous, thick, luscious and simple delicious, barrelled in ex Spanish sherry olorroso cask is amazing.
Will be back for more!
The tour involves a single tasting whisky, which I think is a bit disappointing. I would have done it if I got to taste some core whiskies as well.
It's really worth a visit! The Whisky is great, unfortunately not quite my style. Having said that, though, I only selected 'The Journey Whisky Flight Experience', with three whiskys (the double cask, the sherry cask, and the Journeyman) …
Whilst I was not a big fan of Hellyers Road scotch before, I was converted and actually looking forward to go back.
The restaurant offers delicious meals catering for all dietary needs, and also …
